'Les Deux Anges' 2022 Chateau de l'Escarelle, France
Palest of the palest of the pale. And not to be confused with that other Provence rosé involving Angels...
Chateau de l'Escarelle hugs the slopes of the Montagne de la Loube, with vines up to 500 metres above sea level (the grapes for this wine come from 350m). The vineyards are not only certified organic but also have an Haute Valeur Environmentale (HVE) accolade. The estate is big on sustainability. The current owner made his money recycling office furniture elsewhere in France before realising his true dream.
So what about the wine? It's a blend of 60% Syrah with equal parts of Cinsault and Grenache. Hand harvested and then the grapes are sorted manually not once, but twice. A little bit of skin contact for the colour. Then aged on fine lees, which gives a light smoky character. Delish on its own. Sings with food.
