Edoardo Miroglio, Soli Pinot Noir 2019, Bulgaria
We’ve sold this wine since we first opened in 2013 and it is still a best-seller. And it's also a great Christmas wine. Why? Because Pinot Noir really is one of the best wines to go with turkey ‘n trimmings. Light enough for the breast meat. Earthy enough for the more gamey leg meat. Flavoursome enough for all the sausages, stuffing etc.
The producer is Eduardo Miroglio who made his money in textiles in Italy before buying vineyards in the Thracian wine region, in southern Bulgaria near the border with Greece and Turkey - which now produces some of the country’s best wines.
This Pinot has the heady Pinot scent, but also some smoky notes and hints of wet leaves in a forest (what the wine trade loves to call ‘sous bois’). It retails with us for under £14, and you really cannot get an enjoyable Burgundy for that money. Stick it in a decanter, tell your friends it’s from Beaune - and see if anyone challenges you.
