Tempranillo at its most profound comes from (in our opinion) Ribera del Duero. Scattered with old, twisted vines - it produces rich, inky, age-worthy wines. As it's only a couple of hours drive north of Madrid, it is loved by the jet set. And two of Spain's most revered wineries are in the region (Vega Sicilia and Dominio de Pingus). While Bodegas Pascual isn't quite in the same league, it is pretty damn good, and comparatively great value. The average age of vines is 50 years and the cellars date back to the 14th century.
Oak is used sparingly. Dark, brooding and soulful.
