MAD Furmint 2016, Szent Thomas, Hungary
You don’t have to be bonkers to drink this… Mad actually refers to a village near Tokaj.
The grape - Furmint - is best known for sweet Tokaji wine, but it also makes superb dry wines. The Szent Tamás winery aims to highlight the mineral character of the volcanic soils in Mad. It sources grapes from 26 different vineyards from around the region, and its winemaker is the son of one of Hungary’s greatest winemakers, Istvan Szepsy (sommeliers swoon over his sweet Tokaji, just don’t ask how much it costs).
This is quite a lean expression of Furmint, with some honey notes developing - and only 11% ABV. It reminds us of a Loire Chenin or a steely Chablis. Perfect for a light summer supper.
