'Pharos' Rioja Blanco 2018, Bodegas Classica
An easy-drinking aromatic crisp white made from grapes across the region - a great intro to white Rioja. A big hit in the shop.
Rioja Blanco Viñas Viejas 2019, Luis Cañas
A white Rioja that straddles the styles of the old and the new. Vibrant citrussy Viura is blended with the more weighty Malvasia and the brief barrel maturation adds a honeyed roundness to the crisp lemony fruit. Great with food, and a good alternative to Burgundy. The grapes come from vines with an average age of 57 years, in Rioja Alavesa.
'Jarrate' 2019, Abel Mendoza
Abel and his wife Maite have been making understated wines in Rioja Alavesa since 1988. They have a cult following. To spend time with Abel in his plots around in the hills around San Vicente (as Paola did last year) is fascinating. He doesn't want to stamp the wines with any particular style - just his utter respect for the quality of the grapes, and for the magical places that they were grown. This 100% Tempranillo is more or less a Joven - unoaked, fruity and easy drinking.
Rioja Crianza 2017, Hacienda Grimon
A rich, toasty red from Rioja Alta that has spent 14 months in American and French oak - a little longer than is normal for for a crianza - and ten months in bottle before release. It is mainly Tempranillo with a bit of Garnacha and Graciano completing the blend. The Olivans family who make the wines practice organics, but (like Luis Cañas and Abel Mendoza) are not certified.
Viña Alberdi Reserva 2015, La Rioja Alta
For many people, this is what a great modern Rioja is all about. Rich, smooth, complex and with lots of sweet spice notes (think vanilla and cinnamon). From the stable of the iconic Rioja Alta based in - you guessed it - the Rioja Alta wine region. The wine is matured for two years in American oak barrels manufactured in-house, the first year in new oak and the second year in four-year-old barrels. It then stays in bottle for another year. 100% Tempranillo. A classic.
Reserva Especial 2006, Urbina
Old school more mature Rioja that has won a legion of fans in the shop. Made from Tempranillo plus a little Graciano and Mazuelo, this wine comes from a family-owned estate around the village of Cuzcurrita, situated in the north-west point area of Rioja Alta. This wine sits between a Reserva and a Gran Reserva, aged for a two years in French and American oak casks and a minimum of 2 years in bottle before release. Organic practices.
