Pinot Gris 2021, Craven, South Africa
We've tagged this as orange, as it has spend six days on skins before pressing. But really, it's a gorgeous deep pink. Pinot Gris is a dusky pink skinned-grape and gives a beautiful colour when it stays in extended contact with the skin.
It has a bit of structure, with some lovely aromatics. There's a touch of rhubarb and blood orange about it, an orchardy vibe, with some gentle herb and spice notes. Lots of satisfaction for 11.5% ABV.
In terms of winemaking, Mick and Jeanine Craven keep things are kept relatively simple; no cultured yeasts, enzymes or fining agents are added. Juice is pressed into old oak barrels and minimal additions of sulphur are used at bottling.
