St Ilia Merlot 2017, Edoardo Miroglio, Bulgaria
Budget Pomerol - just don't tell the Bordelais we said that
Sant'Ilia is another brand in the growing portfolio of our favourite Bulgarian winery, started in 2005 by Italian textile manufacturer Edoardo Miroglio - who initially came to the Thrace region to look for a factory.
This is a ripe, soft, smokey Merlot with a bit of age on it, so it is developing some prune and tobacco notes. We like to think of it as a right bank Bordeaux (where Merlot dominates) with the volume turned up to 11. It’s a good one to have to hand when guests drop in.
When you want to drink something nice but don’t want to push the boat out.
