Join Us For A Month Celebrating Rioja

This October at Vindinista we are joining in a month-long campaign called Shop Rioja! It's a chance for us to tell you about what is so great about this diverse Spanish region and your chance to explore its different facets.

We've expanded our range in the shop (online to follow soon), have put together a limited number of six cracking wines from Rioja in a canvas six-bottle bag, will be doing free tastings outside the shop and a ticketed Zoom tasting with Rioja-based winemaker Bryan MacRobert, of MacRobert & Canals.

For many people, Rioja means smooth, rich reds. And about 95% of the wines produced are reds - usually made from Tempranillo or Garnacha, or a blend with some local grapes in support. But it also makes some fabulous whites from the Viura grape (even though other grapes like Tempranillo Blanco and Sauvignon Blanc are permitted).

There are also a number of winemakers turning their backs on the rigid oak and bottle ageing classifications and making wines that are more terroir driven and say more about where they are grown than how they are matured. (Rioja is split into seven valleys, with rich and varied geologies and different elevations.)

It is these winemakers who helped push through a change in how Rioja is classified - they can now add a municipality or village onto their wine labels, rather like in Burgundy.

Over the next four weeks, we will be showcasing the diversity of wines from La Rioja.
