Pinot Blanc 'Les Jardins' 2019, Domaine Ostertag, France
André Ostertag is one of our Alsace wine heroes, making fabulous terroir-driven wines that make sommeliers weep. OK, we may have made that last bit up, but these wines do have a wine geeky following and for good reason.
It's a family affair. His wife does the artwork on the labels. His son Arthur has now taken over the winemaking. They converted to biodynamics in the 1990s and are also certified organic.
This Pinot Blanc was aged for nine months on its lees in old 228-litre oak barrels in the style of Burgundy. Sourced from 20+-year-old vines growing in clay and silt, marl and sandstone. It is soft, charming and not too heavy. If you don't like searing acidity in your whites, this is a must-try. Like many dry whites from Alsace, it is great with a huge variety of food - perfect for a Chinese dumpling fest.
